The Magic of Large Numbers versus Clinical Experience
By
This month’s issue of Psychiatric Annals presents several cases presented at the “What’s Your Treatment?” segment at the Fifth Annual Psychiatric Annals Symposium. In each case, a patient with a particular problem who did not respond to initial treatment, but did respond to other treatments tried in sequence, is presented. What value does going over such single cases have when there are large, random-assignment, placebo-controlled studies available as a gold standard to show us the relative efficacy of various treatments?
