Making the Most of Effective Treatments

By Jan Fawcett, MD

The September issue of Psychiatric Annals reviews treatment issues across four spectra of disorders: autism spectrum disorders (ASD), schizophrenia, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and bipolar disorder. In the case of ASD and ADHD, we have turned to behavioral pediatrics for articles examining complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) treatments. Interestingly, the review of ASD focuses on scientifically unsupported treatments, while the article on ADHD focuses on integrative treatments that have evidence of being helpful, perhaps reflecting the degree of development of treatment in the two disorders.
